Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi)
Generations to come will scare believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood.
-Albert Einstein (to Mahatma Gandhi)
Mahatma Gandhi was a visionary leader.
He was the pioneer of Satyagraha movements.
He inspired people to understand and learn resistance through non-violent civil disobedience.
There are a lot of misgivings about Mahatma Gandhi in the mind of our people.
Unlike I had already mentioned one in my previous article ‘Independence Day’ released on August 15 2021.

Gandhiji initially and from a very long time continued to oppose partition.
He said Partition can happen only on his dead body.
He even suggested that let Jinnah be the prime minister if that can avoid partition. [Jinnah was a dying man (a well guarded secret). He had less than a year to live. He wanted to ensure partition happens before he is gone.]
Britishers wanted to show they cared for the muslim subjects and princely states.
They ignored the fact that even congress represented muslims.
If they had their way, India would be divided into hundreds of fragments rather than just two.
Why is Gandhiji blamed for partition of India?
Mahatma Gandhi never endorsed partition. Infact he opposed it tooth and nail. He was not part of the most of the paritition disucssion. In fact he was sidelined.
Gandhiji was practically sidelined. This can be understood by the statement —
‘Everybody is eager to garland my photos and statues. But nobody wants to follow my advice.’
—Mahatma Gandhi
And yet, when the paritition was announced, he was silent. He didn’t denounce it because he cared for emotions of others.
Why didn’t Gandhiji opposed parition, when he had the will and strength to do it?
As I believe, it was because even Gandhiji knew, what he was capable of. If he had denounced paritition, it would have been distraous.
Gandhji was completely forshaken by the consequence of Direct Action Day of 1946.
He understood his people better than anyone else.
He knew trying to prevent parition would lead into an unprecedented (never having happened or existed before) bloodshed, he was willing to pull the country out of…
Consider what happened during parition.
It happened on two regions — Punjab border (Pakistan) and bengal border (East Pakistan).
The total deaths range between 2.5 Lac to 5 lac or even more.
Now consider that what would have happened, if a riot had broken up in every town, and every village of the country. Probably half the population would have been perished. And Gandhiji had no courage to see such a devastation.
Gandhiji’s worry of riot is but obvious.
And those without analysing complete situation with critical thinking and knowledge would eternally blame Mahatma Gandhi for India’s parition.
Just turn back the hands of and see where Gandhiji was when we gained independence.
When Jawaharlal Nehru was making the famous “While the whole world was sleeping…” speech, 78-year-old Gandhiji was walking along the alleys of then Calcutta with the plead to stop communal violence.
On 15 August 1947, when the day of independence finally arrived, it was relished all over the nation. But in Calcutta, Mahatma Gandhiji was worried and trying hard to end the violence because of the partition.
Gandhiji refused to participate in any celebrations.
“I cannot rejoice on August 15. I do not want to deceive you. But at the same time, I shall not ask you not to rejoice. Unfortunately, the kind of freedom we have got today contains also the seeds of future conflict between India and Pakistan. How can we therefore light the lamps?” said Gandhiji.
“To me, peace between Hindus and Muslims is more important than the declaration of independence”, was the words from him.
